November 22 – December 21
There are three gems this month, Turquoise, Tanzanite and Zircon.
Turquoise is one of the oldest gemstones ever found and identified. Its color is legend, but it is not limited to the perfect blue-green we generally associate with it. Perhaps, if this is your birthstone, you also have different aspects to your personality besides what appears when people first become acquainted with you. This gem’s color ranges from egg-shell blue to greenish blue and it can be somewhat translucent. Its name is said to come from the French for Turkish stone, “pierre tourque.” Turquoise is a favorite gem for cabochons and inlays and it is a classic Southwest American gem.
Tanzanite, with its beautiful violet-blue color, was used as an alternative to sapphire for a while because it was less pricey, but before too long it earned its place as a treasured gem due to its own intrinsic beauty. Occasionally, it is heated to deepen the color saturation. Tanzanite is found in Tanzania exclusively. It was discovered in the late 1960’s.
While the two previous gems are prized for their rich blue colors, Zircon, which occurs in all colors of the spectrum, is especially valued when it is red. Thus if you choose Tanzanite or Turquoise to acknowledge your birth month, you will be identifying with a cool color, blue, whereas if you prefer Zircon you would be choosing a warm color, red. Interestingly, the name Zircon is derived from Arabic words that mean “gold color.” Red is, indeed, close to gold and a red Zircon in a gold setting is truly stunning.
Zircon is believed to increase one’s appetite at the table and it is associated with hospitality, ensuring the wearer a friendly welcome wherever he or she may go. It is also believed to ensure sound sleep, free of nightmares. In a sense, this is much like finding a warm welcome in one’s dreams as well.
Similarly, Turquoise symbolizes a peaceful home and friendship. In fact, it is one of the earliest gems to be used as a protective amulet, a fact that is most likely related to its being one of the earliest stones to be considered a gem. In ancient cultures, Turquoise represented wealth also. Wealth can be interpreted in several ways, of course. For instance, greatness of heart is a form of wealth you might be conveying while wearing Turquoise.
Tanzanite is said to bring one closer to one’s spiritual life. It is said to releases one’s communication abilities, more specifically it gives the ability to speak the truth with great ease. Tanzanite is the gem of honesty and compassion. As you see, in their own way, all three gems for December have a close connection to human relations.
If these are your birthstones, you are said to be a natural teacher and an organized individual. You favor straightforwardness and always seek the truth. As a disciplined person, you tend to get what you need without cutting corners and you apply the same discipline when assisting others.
The December flower is the Narcissus. The meaning of this flower is respect and modesty.
